Heavy wet snows followed by rain can be especially troublesome to many deciduous trees. Flowering plum, dogwood and Japanese maple are often damaged by heavy snow loads.

You can use a broom or other implement to relieve the snow load, beginning low in the tree or shrub. DO NOT add the weight of the higher branches of snow onto the lower branches.

You can also brace up broken branches (if possible), which can sometimes be mended. If your tree suffers from a substantial break, it is best to prune out the broken branch.
